What should I replace? Keyboard or logic board? Please help!

DESCRIPTION:

My MacBook Pro has been working fine, except, the left shift key and the option key are activated (i.e the computer thinks I'm holding the shift key/option key when I'm not).

I had spilled a little water over a year ago. I took it to Apple, they said I have to replace my entire logic board. I couldn't afford it, so took it back. Surprisingly, it worked fine. It's been almost 8 months and I've used this MacBook almost every day since then.

Lately, I had this issue of the shift and option key. I've also had occasional flickering and lines on my screen (quiet rarely so far). Note that this problem goes away when I switch off my MacBook and leave it for a while. It works fine when I switch it back on, and after a few hours, or minutes sometimes, the shift key acts up. I have disabled the option key for now.

I took it to different service center now (3rd party), and they told me my logic board is fine and that I only need to change my keyboard. I don't know what to believe.

The Apple Hardware Test did not detect any problems even on the extended test.

QUESTIONS:

1. Should I change my logic board or just replace the keyboard?

2. Do good third party fixes, or DIY fixes work long time?

3. Does anybody know what is wrong with my MacBook?

Hope to find some answers here as the two different diagnosis has left me very confused. Thanks a lot for your time!

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

I would not recommend replacing the logic board, as it simply does not make any economical sense.

It is unlikely that the logic board is damaged, it's just the keyboard wiring layer beneath is shorted by water. However you cannot replace just the keyboard (unless you rip it off destructively), you have to replace the entire top case assembly.

So why not try with a known good unit? I find it interesting that most people here prefer to try the repair anyway before even locating the exact damage.

Thanks for answering! Would you happen to know why my display flickers and shows strange lines every now and then? How can I be sure that this is not due to some damage on the logic board?

Also, do I just start my computer normally after replacing the upper case, or are there any settings I need to do before I begin work on my MacBook?

by

Tom why do you say the keyboard has to be ripped off? It's a 2012 model with screws.

by

You must be talking about macbook air rivets, which can fully be ripped ! I grab a corner with pliers and ripppppppppppppppppppp feels good too. Then I just place MBP screws in the rivet holes.........Next! Your macbook pro whatloud uses screws I have no idea why he's telling you to replace the topcase.

And on another note Tom, the majority of most repairers that come here don't have spare units to try stuff with.

@mayer Do you think this will work on my mid 2012 model?

http://www.amazon.in/Apple-A1278-Macbook...

Also, my keyboard is working okay now (typing on it), but it acts up at times.

Right now, this is what's happening, when I try to adjust the light.

Will I have to replace the backlight as well or can I reuse my old backlight if I remove it carefully? Will I need to put some adhesive if I'm reusing my old backlight? There are no instructions to replace old backlight anywhere.

Comments:

You can reuse backlight film if your careful it should have enough adhesive to just press it back down and stick, if not dab small spot of super glue every 4 inches around it. If you worried about it get a keyboard that comes with a new backlight film.

Hey no problem I won't be coming on here anymore to help the community because I gave a comment that was in now way wrong and was docked for it so I hope it works out for you.

by

Well that's what you need and may work but the prices is outrageous. Do some shopping!

by

@mayer It's about $25. Guess you didn't see the currency!

OK, when i hear people say they took something to the Apple Store I cringe. It's in he title folks, "Store" you know that area in the back? with he geniuses ( they prefer to be called service techs by the way) well that back area is just stock. You wasted your time and effort by going to an Apple store because is just a show room floor. Now if customers were a bi smarter and listened, I always say "i'll povide you with up to 3 Apple Auhroized service providers, the are flexable can see you the same day and go buy Apple's guidelines"

did you know that your item isnt fixed at the ars did you know that they say they order the parts but times out of 10 they just send it to the depot and have it repaired there and then shipped back? if you own a watch they offer you this by default.

and im not saying anything that isnt anything i havent said while assisting my customers .i love my customers, but the stupidest hing you can do is go to an apple retail store 1) packed 2) YOU WILL LEAVE YOUR MACBOOK THERE BECAUES IT WONT BE THERE IT WILL BE SENT TO A SERVICE DEPOT

3) you have to wait if you walk in for a couple hours. 4) geniuses have no diffferent tools than what we have here over phone or chat.

Now if you want to do anything with apple becuase "scurred " of he evil aasps and yes that is valid ive seen one aasp rip off a poor old lady asking if she could fx her computerand for some reaon she uploaded the receipt and these jerks charged her 200 bucks 100 for labor, yes labor, and they didnt even bother to give her more ram, it wasthe same measilly four gigs. so i helped her out showed her this site, then showed her amazon in uk, and she was shocked o say the least.

ill go back and read the rest of your post, but im goig to have to stop what im doing and when i read " i toook to an apple retail store. ill have to stop." because its so stuipd if you listen to use ew can offer 3 aasp and you can BARgin with them. and they go by our warrranies and iwll usually offer same day service.
