Why do dvd's freeze (not cracked or scratched)?

When I watch dvd's in the disc drive, they will freeze part way through the movie. I try ejecting or fast forwarding or skipping scenes but it keeps happening. They are not cracked or scratched.

Sounds like

overheating. Playing DVDs are processor intensive tasks... If you haven't maxed out the RAM there's even more processing going on (reading writing to VM).

Cleaning out inside with canned Air, Maxing out RAM, Verifying the HD, & having >10% free space on the HD could all help solve the problem.
