Problems after connecting the laptop with external monitor & keyboard

My ASUS F80L is loaded with Windows XP. I recently connected an external monitor and an external keyboard with the laptop. After connecting external monitor (HP W2317d) and keyboard (Dell KB 1421), the laptop built-in keyboard is making trouble. In Q to P series, it is typing correctly from Q to Y and from Y to P it is typing 4, 5, 6 and -. The same problem is happening for other series also. The changed characters can be typed using function key in a good built-in keyboard. For example, Fn+Y is supposed to type 4 in a good built-in keyboard. Can anybody please help me in solving this issue? Thank you in advance.

Is the keyboard the same as the laptops keyboard? Or is it of a different language.

Thank you Brian. The language of both keyboards are same. However, they are not exactly same. The laptop built-in keyboard has a Fn (function) key while there is no Fn key in the external keyboard. In the control panel, the built-in keyboard is named as 'Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft natural PS/2 Keyboard. The external keyboard is named in control panel as 'HID keyboard Device'.
