lid bent, screen has crazy colour strip on LHS

Apple MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.4 13" (Unibody) Specs

Identifiers: Late 2008/Aluminum - MB467LL/A - MacBook5,1 - A1278 - 2254

a1278 was dropped on left rear corner (near power socket). a 2" vertical strip of colourful 'interference' started appearing along the left edge of the screen. pulling the right top corner of the screen used to help, but it is almost constant now and pulling the corner no longer helps.

i tried striping the machine down to remove the lcd and then straightening the lid, but it is still as bad as ever when i put it back together.

what would be the next steps? i saw threads saying that some people had padded the video connector inside the lid with bicycle tube rubber. others seem to have padded between the lcd and the lid with paper.

many thanks for any suggestions,

tim

I would start be replacing the case itself. Maybe if the tension of the bent case is relieved the LCD will behave normally. If this does not remedy the situation, then a new LCD would be in order. Padding will only offer a temporary solution to a problem that will eventually rear it's ugly head again.

+ I agree. The problem is getting just the shell. These should become available soon as used parts. Right now I've only been able to locate the screens and the complete assembly. Lowest price on the assembly I saw was $589 on eBay. Could we have the last three letters of your serial number to exactly identify which book you have and maybe we can locate just the part you need.

the last 3 of the serial number are "1ax".

a new lid is kinda what i suspected too. i was trolling ebay for lid shells from parted macs - most seemed to be heavily dented. :( since it is an apple part i wasn't hoping it wouldn't come to this.

I changed you to the correct Mac. Looks like the part number for the full display is 661-4820. Big bucks but a starting place to search.

hello,

i am back to this issue after a long delay. i wonder if the following ebay item would be the right one for my mac. the seller says it is for a 'macbook pro' and i have a 'macbook', but they call it a 'a1278' - is it ok to use on my machine?

MB and MBP have a difference on the cover.

The one you have a link for is for a MBP. If you look at the top of the case at both ends there's single magnet and on the right side middle there's a magnet. The magnets on top are so the MBP could go to sleep when the lid is close and the side one is the lock.

Now on the other hand MB has double magnets on both top ends and on the left middle a single magnet.

There's a big difference so make sure you buy the correct one.

But if you do buy a MBP lit it does fit, but it won't go to standby or sleep mode when the lit is close and the battery will continue draining. That's the draw back of the incorrect it.

Hope that helps. Good luck with that.

thanks for that warning! i have been talking to the vendor and he thinks he can source a macbook lid cover so i am waiting to see if he can send me a photo of the actual unit.

by the way, apple recently repriced the replacement top assembly at $450 if i did it at the apple store. i will still try getting hold of a lid from hong kong for $90 first.
