@longsight sounds like a laser assembly issue. Try to use a commercially available lens cleaner. With a suitable laser lens cleaning kit, or with a cotton-swab and some isopropyl alcohol (some disassembly required) try to clean the lens

tried to clean yesterday with just a clean cloth.hard to get to lens,could only see one laser lens,is that usually the case,one lens for dvd and cd.i have played a cleaning disc in player but still the same.where would I get isopropyl alcohol
I get my 99% from a local pharmacy.
