Volume down button and silent switch not working

I've a 4 year old iPhone 2G and its volume down button hasn't been working for a while and it never really bothered me but last night the silent switch stopped working.

What can I do to fix this? I have no problem doing a teardown to fix it but i don't have the 60/70 bucks for a new back case. Is it possible?
