When to replace motherboard?

So I messed up and got some water on my phone, and Samsung will not fix it because I tripped the KNOX counter (really stupid of me since I didn't even keep it rooted for more than a few minutes) I went to the samsung store and they "said" I needed to replace my motherboard and LCD for an amazing price of $725. The lcd screen is fully receptive to the S-Pen, but will not work when I touch the lower portion of the screen with my fingers ( the rest seem to be fine) I checked for Liquid damage from the simtray indicator and that seems to be fine. Now I was just wondering if I actually needed to change the mother board or if it was more of a samsung money grab to reset the knox counter? and Could I not just fix this problem by fixing the LCD.

P.S

I've worked at a cell phone repair shop, but i've repaired a few iphones my self, so I am planning to fix the screen my self.

Answer this question I have this problem too

If youre screen is working (the top half at least) and bottom isn't almost guaranteed damaged screen. First I would take it apart instead of continuing to use it if it's been wet. Clean it properly then inspect your screen. If everything else is working you don't need a new board, just a screen.

Samsung always loves to sell the higher priced option:)

I would clean the motherboard and exam it correctly. And replace the screen because your screen is damage and also the battery that is what cause your phone to short out a component on your motherboard and that is what I recommend my customers when they come in with water damage phone even if the phone turns on. Its better to be safe then sorry at the end, once it dies completely because they didn't want to replace the battery. Good luck and I hope this helps let me know how it goes.

- Cleaning steps

1) remove battery

2) ultrasonic clean the board with electronics cleaner solution

3) clean afterwards with Isopropyl alcohol 99%

4) Exam for corrosion and water spots on board

5) Test phone with new screen and battery
