What metals are in one
I'm scrapping my old washer and want to be sure if the outer shell is steel or aluminium.

Usually the outer shell of household appliances is steel. I've never seen an appliance with an aluminium shell, except for the trim or fascia.
Update (05/26/2016)
Washing machine drums are usually stainless, and backplates are galvanized steel.
