Why isn't the battry working properly?

Hello, I purchased a replacement battery for my older MacBook Pro 15”. The shape, connections and model number of the battery all match the one that I am replacing. I installed the battery and saw that the power adapter had changed to amber indicating that it was changing and went about my day. BUT, the battery is not working at all and the computer is indicating that it can not charge. I’ve tried everything: resting the RAM, making sure the connections are clean and everything fit well in the computer. And yet, no battery power. I even put the old battery back in to make sure the computer worked properly and it does.

Please advise.

First lets get a better idea of what's really happening with the battery. In my opinion Apple battery icon is like a car dashboard idiot light, it really tells you nothing. Download and run a free app called Coconut Battery:

Hit the download link, not the ads.

Run it and tell us your results.

Did you buy an OEM battery? That should be the ONLY battery you buy....one actually manufactured by Apple's supplier. Apple's OEM batteries have a safety chip in it that communicates proper functions and protections across the cells. Don't buy unknown batteries that risk damage to property and health.

@jblongz can you give us a link to confirm the existence of this chip? I'd really like to know about it.
