Why wont my phone stay on?

I try to turn the phone on but it wont keep a charge. Took the phone to apple technicians and the guy plugged it up and said there was nothing he could do. I find this hard to beleive and he didnt seem to be to interested in helping me. I really dont care about the phone but I have important numbers and pictures and texts that I would like to know if there is a way to retreive this information. Unfortunatlely I wasnt able to sync my phone before this problem started.

What happens when you plug it into your computer?

Will the phone work while plugged in, did this happen all of the sudden, gradually, or after some kind of accident with the phone?

if you can get a response with mains charger try sending things by wifi/bluetooth to your computer or email. i think your problem may be battery related-you may not get a response via USB/itunes as there isn't enough power to send. The higher output on a mains charger should get a response but If this is the original battery from new then quite possibly it is just old and tired. you could try replacing it yourself or ask the unhelpful technician to be more helpful!

all the best-have just replaced battery in my 2g and it was pretty straight forward. take care removing the back cover, I didn't and have replaced that too!
