iPod won't register on computer or turn on past Apple screen

My Ipod Classic 160 gb is failing all of a sudden. Won't respond at all when not connected to power. When connected, iPod flashes dim Apple screen over and over. If I try restoring it (center button+menu button hold), the screen will light up with the Apple logo but then constantly restarts that. Won't show up on a computer. Can't hear hard drive turning. Is the whole hard drive failing or just the logic board? Also does the fact that it won't respond when not connected to power point to battery issues, or could that also be a logic board issue?

@cdhoover that's a tough one. I'd start with a new battery and get a Zif-to-USB adapter. Replace the battery and check the hard drive on your computer by using the adapter. That way you can rule it out as the culprit. Of course you also want to make sure that you use a good cable and that your dock connector is clean, clear of lint and has no broken, bend or corroded pins.
