am in Snow Leopard
routine maintenance couldn't verify disk, went to DU to repair; told to reinstall OS. ran fsck -fy on terminal but last entry I typed was REBOOT. nothing happened. now cant boot at all. gray progress bar then it shuts down.
nothing works. cant eject disk; S user mode just spinning wheel.
Is this a good question?

MY ANSWER:
Resetting the NVRAM disconnected my bluetooth mouse and keyboard hence I had no responses from any key combos when trying to reboot. Reconnecting with USB keyboard and a USB mouse resolved this issue - the install disc was already in the drive.
I went into Disk Utility, wiped the drive and am now doing a clean re-install.

If you have the original installation disk in the optical drive, first try holding down the "C" key when booting. That failing, open it up and disconnected the hard disk drive cables and try it again. Note the diagnostic LEDs to the right of the RAM slots and tell us know your results.

I've tried the C key no luck - am wondering if my BT has been disabled and my keyboard is not even recognised, which explains why no key combos are working.
As for opening up my iMac? that's pretty drastic - at this point I'm not ready to do that just yet tho might consider it in another 48 hrs if no other resolution has been made.
No it's not drastic. I do it every day. Just unplug it, take the 8 screws out of the display and gently lean it forward so you don't even need to disconnect anything, reach in and disconnect the hard drive cables. yes, it is drastic for me due to a space issue - I am in an extremely tight space, this would involve a great deal of effort and difficulty. would really appreciate alternatives. also as I mentioned above, I am thinking my BT has somehow become disconnected and that's why no key combos are working any longer. I also have no reason to believe my HD is bad.
I've only been working on Apples since 1979 and I have no idea what a BT is.
BlueTooth lol!! don't you get tired of typing everything out? anyway my keyboard is bluetooth - maybe there's no response because the reset "undiscovered" my keyboard? is that possible? also holding the left mouse down does nothing as well. it's also BT

Do you have a bootable external drive or the gray install disk the system came with? If you do give it a try.

the install disk is in the drive; makes no difference - yes, I'd like very much to just reboot off of that.

after reviewing various suggestions elsewhere, it occurred to me that resetting the NVRAM might also have left my keyboard undiscoverable? is there a way to know? maybe this is why none of the key combos work any more - and everything went south after I did the reset -
