An indicator that your alternator is not working is that your battery will go flat, car will not start, and/or warning light will be on. However these can be any number of issues with your car, so the only way to test whether or not you alternator is working is to use a voltometer. When your car is running, there should be a voltage drop between the positive and negative terminal of the alternator. If there is not, then your alternator is not working correctly.

The best way and easiest it to start your motor and then disconnect the battery. If the motor keeps running then your alternator is working. But if it doesn't stay running for say like 30min to an hour then your alternator is bad and you need a new one.
