Fresh install of Snow Leopard on new HD using external USB enclosure?

I would like to replace the hard drive in my MacBook Pro and upgrade to Snow Leopard at the same time, but I would like to install the OS from scratch and not clone the drive. I have a problem though, the optical drive on my MacBook Pro is not working. I have ordered a DVD lens cleaner, however if that doesn't work can I do a fresh install the OS on the new HD using my iMac and an external USB enclosure?

Any help much appreciated.

You have a macbook pro and a imac. The problem is if your imac is not a intel machine it won't run Snow Leopard. If it is a intel machine use the firewire target disk mode to do your install. I am including a link on how to do that. Good luck. Ralph
