I've replaced the hard drive in my iMac following the instructions on this site on how to. After reassembling the screen is now really dark and barely visible. I've double checked all the connections for the display and cannot fathom what I've missed or if I've knocked something which could cause this.

On step 10 of the replacement of hard drive it talks about removing the inverter connector. That is were I would focus my attention and see if you may have damaged the connector or wires. See:
