Hard drive not recognized.

Macbook pro doesn't see hard drive. Removed hard drive ran S.M.A.R.T & sector test everything was ok. Connected hard drive to usb and it booted up. Would the problem be the hard drive cable or the motherboard?

I really don't have enough information on the history of this drive to give you a good answer. It sounds to me that it may be formatted incorrectly. Could be Apple Partition map instead of GUID. Where did it come from, what machine was it formatted on, why are you replacing it, did you boot up from it using an external enclosure

Yes

the cable, the connectors the buss itself could be where the fault lies.

Examining the connectors under a high power magnifying glass, and if possible swapping ribbon cables to see if the problem follows are about all the DIY test you can do.
