Computer will not start up. Had video problems. Ran Apple Hardware Test, which reported bad video controller. Eventually, computer went dead. Am looking for advice on part(s) to replace or just trashing the computer.

This sounds like a possible Nvidia video chip problem which may qualify for the Apple recall, meaning you get a new logic board. Please refer to this question. Then click on the "Contact" link given in the first answer to talk to Apple.
