Hi,

Check that the Data Connection setting has been turned on.

Go to Menu > Settings > Wireless and Networks > more > Mobile Networks > Data Connection, tap to enter, select On.

This option is a good one to use to control your data download, if you are on a plan. When turned off it stops all internet (and MMS) activity, but your phone will still operate as a phone. Therefore any apps that you have installed are prevented from downloading automatically (if that is the setting they have) unless you decide that it is allowed. The downside is that you don't have MMS access either unless it is turned on.

Howdy, perhaps this has changed in recent os, and I'm having trouble with sending sms messages, and the data connection is on, and the setting layout is different. I'm on oreo rn. Thank you

@Chris Brown ,

If you mean mms (texts with pictures, videos etc) check that the APN settings in the phone are what is shown on your phone service provider's website as they vary from provider to provider.

Go to Home > Apps > Settings app > Network and Internet > Mobile Network > Access Point Names (APN) > and find the setting with MMS in the name.

Tap to enter and check that the settings in there correspond with what is shown on your service provider's website for APN MMS settings.

Some will be greyed out and cannot be changed as they are set when you insert the SIM card but there should be settings for MMSC, MMS Proxy, MMS port, MCC, MNC, APN Type etc

The important one is MMSC as this is the address for mms messages to be sent to. Not to say the others are less important but no address no can send.

If you meant sms (plain texts) then contact your service provider as this type of message sending uses a different protocol and doesn't rely on a data connection but on the phone connection itself. So if the phone works as a phone then the sms should work also unless there is a problem with the phone’s Message app.

Try starting the phone in "safe mode" and check if you can send sms messages OK.

Search online for (insert make and model number of phone) safe mode to find out how to enter safe mode in your phone.

If it works OK in safe mode then a downloaded app is the cause of the problem. The trick is to find out which one.

You will need to uninstall each downloaded app, one by one and test the phone in normal mode between each uninstall. When the phone tests OK then the last uninstalled downloaded app was the problem.

If still no good in safe mode try wiping the phone’s cache partition and check if that resolves the problem.

Search online for (insert make and model number of phone) wipe cache partition to find out how to do this.
