  • Try with a different card
  • If the CF card is new and/or has not been used with an Olympus camera before, it must be formatted in the camera first before you can use it. For instructions on formatting the card, see p. 107 of your camera's user manual.
  • Formatting a CF card will destroy any data present on the card, so if you have a card that might still have data on it, check and if necessary save the data to a computer before you format the card. You can use an universal card reader to access CF cards with any computer that has USB ports. If you don't have a card reader, get one: they're cheap ($10) and very useful if you own any type of digital camera.
  • If you get an error with every (correctly formatted) CF card you try, or the camera refuses to format your CF card, the problem is with the camera and most likely you'll need to have it serviced. A common problem is damage to the CF card socket (bent pins) due to rough handling.
  • The E510 can also use xD cards, although this type of card is now obsolete. If your CF socket is damaged, you might be able to continue using the camera with an xD card if you still have one. Like the CF card, also the xD card must be formatted before you can use it.

Good day,

I don’t know if you still have this camera in your possession. The problem is most likely a bent CF pin which is causing the error. This pin can be replaced to resolve this issue. I use pins from used circuit boards to resolve this issue.
