Hard drive upgrades for Mid 2009 MacBook Pro 15"?

I have a June 2009 Macbook Pro 15". Harddrive died.

What are my upgrade options? I tried to put in a 1T toshiba replacement but it would not recognize it.

The original was a Toshiba MK5055GSXF - 500GB Sata 300, 5400 rpm, 8MB

Is 500 GB the limitation?

Is that why it would not recognize the drive??

No drive size limitations here.

Most likely you have hit one or both of these issues:

Your systems SATA port is SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) and the drive you got is SATA III (6.0 Gb/s). You need to get a drive that matches your systems SATA port.

Your HD SATA cable needs replacing as its damaged.

Can you give us the make and model of your replacement drive so we can check it for you.

You may want to check your systems firmware follow this Apple T/N: About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers make sure you are at least at the level listed or newer.
