Hi,

Is your microphone a stereo microphone?

What type of plug connector is on the microphone that makes you have to use an adapter?

Check the microphone plug. If it is a 3.5mm plug like this it is a mono connection.

If it looks like the 3.5mm plug below it has a stereo connection. If it is like this one there may possibly be a broken connection between the microphone and the plug. You can test this if you have a DMM (Digital Multi-Meter - Ohmmeter function). You should get a reading if you connect the Ohmmeter leads between the tip of the plug and the sleeve of the plug and also between the ring of the plug and the sleeve of the plug. The three (3) connections of a plug are known as the tip, ring and sleeve, (as seen from the tip of the plug back to the plug holder). If there is no reading on one of the tests then there is either a faulty connection in the plug, in the microphone or a broken wire in the cord.

Update (03/26/2016)

Hi,

I found this which explains why connecting an XLR to a 3.5mm will not work properly. It does offer a solution if you wish to wire a cable adapter yourself, (with a female XLR at one end to a 3.5mm stereo plug at the other), rather than buy a adapter box as shown in the article. It will work but according to the article it doesn't remove any 'glitch' problems from the sound.

Here is a quote from the article:

The cheap and horrid way of doing this – which totally misses the whole benefit of a balanced microphone, which is avoiding glitches – is to make a cable that wires ONE of the L or R pins on the XLR cable, to BOTH of the L and R pins on the 3.5mm jack. The ground just goes to ground as usual. Whichever pin on the XLR you didn’t choose is just left unwired

It is a stereo adapter, the mic the camcorder came with works perfect.. But the adapter like the one above doesn't work, I bought two adapters and the same issue.. Do I need a special brand of adapter? I need the adapter to connect a xlr cable with a 1/8 plug at one end
