SSD optic drive swap

Of course looking for better speed. My question is: can I run the OSX and my programs on the added SSD and leave my internal HDD for storage? Thanks for the help!

In a word YES.

However the BUS speed of the optical drive may not give you your expected results.

The main drive is Serial ATA (3 Gb/s). I have not found the exact speed of the optical BUS. And I believe The optical drive was PATA, so you will already get a downgrade.

You might be much happier going with a replacement 3.5 " SSHD. These have been very reliable and I generally see a perceived 50% increase in speed

Thank you for the info. My next question would be: can I move my original HDD over to the optic bay and install a SSD in the main spot?

Sadly, no. Your current HD is a 3.5" desktop drive, the optical drive drive carrier can only support a 2.5" laptop drive due to the limited space.
