How difficult is it to replace the optical drive?

How difficult is it to replace the optical drive? I'd assume just replacing the entire Cd/DVD player unit. Is it pretty straight forward to the mechanically inclined person or are there some gnarly trade secret / Soldering resisters Geek-out situations?

They just unplug and a screw or 2 removes them. But you'll probably have to take off the back cover to get into it.

Second option: get a portable drive for those rare occasions that you need it. A perfect fit replacement drive might be expensive or unobtainable.

By the way, if your present drive is giving you errors or won't read at all, try carefully cleaning the dirt and crud off the lens.

Hi @ryanousa,

Replacing ODD drives is fairly straightforward. Just 'Google' DVD or CD drive for you particular model laptop to find the replacement part. It is a complete unit, so all that is necessary is to remove the old and insert the new. If you are fortunate enough to own a Dell, Lenovo or HP/Compacq laptop, you can "Google" search for 'your particular model service manual'. When you find it, you can download it and it details how to remove and install the ODD. If you don't have one of these makes just look for ODD removal of your model laptop on You Tube. You will usually find something relevant on there.
