One chip or two

Is there 1GB in each slot? Then you'll have 3GB which is ok - but matched pairs of RAM are recommended.

maximum RAM So you may want to buy 4GB in two 2GB chips

I actually do not know what is in the slot...because I have not opened up the laptop yet. All I know is that there is 2GB installed. Is there a way to figure out if the laptop has space for another 2GB without opening the laptop?

Under Utilities -System Profiler ->Memory it will tell you what's in each slot without having to open the box.

Click on About this Mac in the upper left corner. Then select more info and go down to where it says memory. It will tell you what memory is in which slot.

Well if you have to 2GB it sound like you have a pair of 1GB. If you bought the MB from a Apple store. So you'll have to buy pair of 2GB. Apple say this MB max is 4GB but aftermarket say 6GB max(1x2GB and 1x4GB), but some say the system won't be sable, try that at your own risk.

Hope that helps and good luck with that.
