How do I tell what has blown on the sansui lcd tv board?

i think the tv took a surge. it broke at the same time, almost,(within minutes) as another piece of electronics in the same room. anyway it popped, and the screen slowly faded away before shutting down. now when i turn it on it just turns on and off and wont respond to any button pressing. repair shop has 3wk wait and wants $100 just to look at it. ive heard it can be a simple fix. capacitor maybe? how do i know and how do i find it?

thanks

Frequently I find bad parts on circuit boards just by looking. A bad resistor may have actually turned black or burned itself open and left a mark on the board. A bad capacitor can have the top of it's casing domed up, or even have the entire casing blown open/off with the guts of the cap all over the place. A bad transistor can also blast itself apart.

So I guess I'm saying, it can't hurt to check the circuit board for some things that don't look right. What I am not saying is that replacing the visibly bad part will necessarily fix your tv. Often a resistor or other part will go bad as a result of another part of the circuit failing.
