Why can't I find movie files?

My macbook pro 13" says "startup disk almost full."

I checked what files are clogging the hard disk and it's video files. I did everything

suggested by various sources on the net, including deleting all videos in iphoto, emptying out the trash, finding the files on finder, etc.

For the life of me, I can't find these files on the hard disk. Theyre like effing ghost files tormenting me. I have only 1 GB left of 250 GB and I can't continue my work because of this.

What the !&&* is going on here? Do I have a defective hard drive? Please help me out.

P.S. It's my daughter's computer and I'd really appreciate the help.

Do a search for .mov, ,mkv, ,avi, .mp3, .wmv.

Most will probably be in Users > Downloads. Drag to trash and empty trash.

Thank you. I tried this and found nothing. What's even weirder, the more files I delete, the lower my remaining space. I went from 1.3 remaining GB to 345 MB.

WTF?

@bronzeknight, my guess is that your storage disk needs a clean up. I would start there as it can't hurt.

Start "Disk Utility," select your partition (you have the main drive and the partition underneath it), and click on "First Aid" then "Repair Disk" or if not directly allowed, start with "Verify Disk."

After that is done, perform "Repair Permissions" and repeat both repairs of disk and permissions to make sure the process is now shorter, meaning some clean-up did occur.

Even better (or in case repair fails), restart your computer in "Restore Mode" by pressing and holding "Command + R" during restart. Then choose "Disk Utility" and perform the repairs as per the above. What happens? Does space increase?

Also, check if you're downloading an update or upgrade from the App store. This could be eating up even more space, causing your free space to decrease.
