Error: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable

Someone pulled the USB cable out of my computer while I was downloading files to the Seagate FreeAgent Go. P/N 9NN2A3-500, S/N 5LZ15WQV. Now I am getting this error message: Location is not available. J:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. I do not want to format and delete all data off the hard drive, is there another way I can fix this?

Sincerely,

Cyndee Horn

You should run checkdisk on the drive.

This is an utility that checks for, and repairs (or at least attempts to repair) file system errors.

There's no guarantee it will work in all cases, there's always a chance some data has been lost and cannot be recovered, but this is usually limited to the data that was being written at the moment the connection to the drive was lost.

Assuming you use Windows, here's the procedure:

Hi Cynthia Garcia,

Please go this step to find what's the problem of you Hard Drive and then take a solution for that:

1- when you connect your hard drive, please listen to sounds of your hard drive.

2- if you dont hear any noise like a clicking, buzzing or unusual sound, take a breath :) .

3- Right click on my computer an click manage.

4- go to Disk management from left sidebar.

5- look at right section to find your Disk.

Hi Homayoon

My Segate can not be found in my computer what should I do? I went all the steps youve mentioned on this page but I could not see my Segate. All I see as I connect my disk is the HDD lights!
