why when i try to charge my ipod it says low battery and it doesnt turn on

is it a classic or "ipod original" model?
(i would guess that it's a 5th generation video or a classic)
any strange clicking noises (maybe in the past)?
the message often shows up when the hard drive fails - so replacing the drive would be the step i would try first
