Installed new adapter and iPad still will not charge?

I have an iPad 4 and a piece of an old lightning charger became lodged inside the port. I was not able to simply remove the lodged piece so I replaced the Lightning port. Everything seemed to have gone well until I plugged the iPad 4 in and it still did not recognize that it was charging. Any suggestions?

Options

Change the battery, Don't use the old broken charger, get one that works correctly..

I have a new charger to go with the new port there are no longer any broken pieces still in use.
