rosecare1, the engine coolant temperature ( ECT) sensor is mounted in the coolant stream. The power control module (PCM) applies 5 volts to the ECT sensor signal circuit. The sensor is a thermistor which changes internal resistance as temperature changes. Your ECT sensor ( you did not give us an exact model and year) is most likely located in the water outlet housing, adjacent to where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine.
