iMac > 2012 AIRPORT? is ad hoc apple MPCIE port?

Hi all,

I've a 1 million $$$ question:

Is the airport mpcie apple proprietary port?

From some images found on google, the airport (at least for imac from 2012) is not a standard mpcie port but a smaller one.

There are some converter?

My aim (if possible) is to connect a egpu through mpcie.

thanks all

I'm not sure I follow your logic here. If you want to push another screen with its own GPU you don't need to go this route.

Let's start with the AirPort card it's a mini PCIe interface which is a standard Broadcom BCM4331 part. No, you can't use it for anything else as the hardware & software of the system is expecting the AirPort card for this connection.

So, to gain a second GPU here you'll need an external Thunderbolt case to hold a standard PCI graphics card. Here's an example using a MacBook Pro: Using an Thunderbolt Video Card with a MacBook Pro using a iMac is not any different.

Mmmmh.

As you can see there are mpcie to pcie converter that run under Windows. I already have it and it works with my old laptop

Airport device (from 2012 i think)

This is not an mpcie device or at least has not the interface of an mpcie device

Infact:

Is an AIPORT -> mpcie converter

But from the picture seems that is just a proprietary connector rewired.

So the complete answer was:

"Under bootcamp (that maybe can support more devices), can be connected any sort of mpcie device to the airport port?

There is an adaptor/converter for the airport port?"

I already have akitio on my main iMac.

I own a second iMac made of spare parts and i just want to investigate more on the capabilities of the logic board just for eperiments.

Nope! The AirPort card is a mini PCI express (mini PCIe) not mini PCI which is different! The PCI standards group created a family of different interfaces which does make conversion and fitting devices confusing!

In any case the root issue still applies here, the system & AirPort port interface is not designed to support a GPU interface you'll need to use an external case.
