See if it will start up from either a retail 9.1 or the original system installation optical disk, by inserting the disk on start up and holding down the "C" key. If it boots OK, then you know it is a software or hard drive issue. You can then Run Disk Utilities to try to repair or reformat the drive (use the write zero option to map out any bad blocks). Then reinstall a system.
