Why is my Microsoft Surface 2 overheating?

I have tried letting the Surface 2 cool but as soon as I turn it back on, the device gets too hot and shuts down.

Options

I would check for available updates as some issues related to heat problems have been addressed. You may also have an issue with the cooling fans or heat sink, which would involve getting into the device.
