My iPhone 5s is totally unresponsive, with a black screen.

Recently, my iPhone 5s started only charging intermittently, then not at all. I tried very hard to get it charging again, but eventually the 'empty battery' icon disappeared and the screen was left totally black. I have since replaced both the lightning port assembly and the battery myself (without obviously messing up, save tearing the TouchID cable), but have never been able to charge it nor seen anything other than a black screen, despite the new battery. I'm not sure whether I simply haven't fixed the initial problem, or whether I've managed to cause additional problems along the way. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ben, unfortunately if you have already replaced the charging port your problem is very likely going to be the charging IC called U2 or USB IC on your iphone 5s motherboard. This is responsible for charging and other functions. It's a quite common problem in several iphone models. Is possible to fix it but you have to find a repair shop that makes this kind of job, it's not very cheap but you can have your iphone fixed for about 100-150 $. Bye.

Thanks a lot James, that does seem very likely. I wonder though whether new iPhone batteries (was not by apple tbf) come with some charge in them? Thus I should have had some response after replacing the battery before the charge depleted again?

They can come completely discharged or with a 30-40%. It depends from the seller. However you can check the battery with a common multimeter. But also if they come without charge once you connect it to the phone and then to the charger the phone should show the battery logo, charge it for few minutes and then turn on, if the battery it's not faulty of course. I think that your problem is what I told you because of the symptoms your phone shows. You can try another battery if you want but you will never find a real original one, because apple does not sell parts to anybody.
