After replacement of Optical Drive Question Mark shows up again

I bought a new optical drive some month ago, installed it and unfortunately it did not work. When I booted my laptop, all what it did was showing a little question mark on a folder in the middle of the screen. I now it means that there is no HardDrive recognized, but the problem was not the HardDrive, but the new optical drive. Please read the whole thread here:

Folder/File with question mark when I boot up

So now I got the replace optical drive: same model (12.7 mm PATA 8x SuperDrive (UJ-85J) ([linked product missing or disabled: IF153-037]) and guess what, I have the same problem: Question Mark!

Is it possible that the optical drive is not compatible with my Powerbook G4? Anyone could install one of these with his laptop? I followed step by step the manual and when I disconnect the optical drive everything is working fine...

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Answer this question I have this problem too

After what you've been through with this problem, i would just forget replacing the drive and use an external Firewire optical drive. After all how often do you use the optical drive? Here's a good one for $100. http://www.frys.com/product/6039898

Thanks for your answer. The idea is to be mobile. Got also an iMac to burn at home... And yes, definitely I don't use it that often, but it would be nice to read CDs and DVDs. After all I paid for something I can't use... :(
