The answer is useless, I have the same problem, I can only assume that it is a bad battery and I don't know how to change/install a new one

won’t  power up at all. been charging on cumpter all nite

Most likely the usb socket on the back of the unit has come loose (solder pad connections broken away, as item 2 on my report above). Try another cable just in case.

It works only with the original Garmin Charger

Hi Mary,

There are multiple reasons your device may not be responding to your power cord causing it not to charge, a number of which are listed on ourtroubleshooting page.

First, make sure your charging cable is securely plugged into your vehicle and that your vehicle is also turned on. It may be that your power cable fuse is no longer functional, and you'll need to purchase a new one.

If you leave your device in your vehicle for an extended period of time, it may have overheated or gotten too cold, and can only operate between 32 degrees Fahrenheit and 113 degrees Fahrenheit.

Hopefully this helps answer your question,

-Ellidie

I understand your problem, but it is probably not the battery. I have purchased 4 different chargers/leads for my nuvi 2599 and none of them will charge it, but the original supplied leads and charger work fine. This seems to be a common problem with the 2599 ltd Many sellers say that their leads work with this satnav; but they do not. There is something peculiar about this model that means ordinary cables from many suppliers will not support the charging function and in some cases will not work properly with a computer to download updates. Before you spend money on a new battery make quite sure that it is not the cable you are using is not at fault.

There are two common causes for this, that I have experienced: 1) the GTM25 charging unit had a badly assembled batch, that caused the outer braid of the charging cable (power return/ground) to touch the red +5V power conductor, that was stripped too far back to expose the copper wire, making it intermittently short. That does NOT blow the fuse, because the standard 5V regulator chip in the part that goes in the lighter socket, is designed to check for shorts, and just stop the 5V supply output electronically. The symptom is: the green LED goes out, and the Garmin will then not charge. The fix is to cut open the rubber part of the little “traffic FM receiver” part (the little slim black box), the one furthest away from the USB plug end, and insulate the bare copper wires so they do not touch, then cover the repair in more electrical tape. Ugly but it works. 2) the USB socket inside the Garmin has broken solder contacts. These CAN be soldered back, but you need a really good low-voltage miniature soldering iron to do this, AND it will need the motherboard removed, it is a major strip-down. I have done it, but then I use to install mainframe computers for a living .
