Replaced hardrive and it stays at the apple white screen on startup

I Recently replaced my hard drive and booting it up it never leaves the white apple startup screen. can i erase everything and start from scratch?

Options

Replace the hard drive/IR cable with a new one from a 2012 15" model if it will boot from the original system installation DVD with the hard drive disconnected.
