HP Photosmart C4480 won't scan with El Capitan operating system. (Mac)

I've tried using the scanning function through system preferences, Preview, and Image Capture, and none of them are showing that a scanner is available even though the USB is plugged in and the printer is printing fine. Has anyone else had this problem?
