SSD Drive Readable, but Not Writable, Not Booting as Startup

I want to add an internal SSD drive as my startup disk in the Optical drive location in my Macbook Pro 15" late 2011. However, after successfully rebooting from the SSD Drive externally, it froze up after about 10 minutes.

Here's the scenario:

1. I connected a new Samsung SSD 850 EVO externally via USB adapter.

2. I formatted it (“Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” with a single GUID partition) and ran SuperDuper to completion.

3. I rebooted holding "Option" and selected the new SSD drive.

4. It worked, and I could open programs. MS Office just needed license key.

5. A DropBox login window appeared and I logged in. It said not enough space available on drive. It asked "Sync Selected Files" or "Sync All Files". I didn't want either, so I just closed the window, but it appeared to start syncing all files anyway.

6. At that point, the fans started spinning rapidly, and after about 5 minutes a transparent gray screen came down and said "Restart your computer by holding down the power button"

7. I restarted using the HDD Drive. A message popped up that said the SSD drive was readable, but not writable, and that I should reformat the drive. "Mac OS X can’t repair the disk “Samsung 500GB.”

8. To test again, I restarted holding down "Option." The SDD drive was still available. I selected it, but the computer went black and shut down.

9. I restarted normally from the HDD drive without any problem, but received the same message regarding the SSD.

Scenario questions I have before I move forward:

a) Is the drive okay, and just needs to be installed internally at this point?

b) Is the drive okay, but needs to go through erasing/formatting/superduper process again?

c) Is the drive fried?

d) Did this happen because too many things were going on through the USB connection, and syncing with Dropbox caused it to choke?

I assume I will need to erase/reformat/copy all over again, but I'm hoping someone can tell me that's not the case. I'm going to get a beer while I wait for word from on-high.

Several possible issues. First become aware of this recall issue because it can cause all kinds of problems and drive you to drink (pun intended). https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro...

Next tell me if you were having having ANY issues with the machine before you started and why you are replacing the drive if other than just a speed increase.

There are issues with the Hard Drive/IR cables failing and taking the hard drives with them. The 2012 cable addressed that problem, so talk to me before spending any money.

So the link you included was for replacement rubber feet...is that correct? I assume you meant to send a link for a 2012 IR cable?

I wasn't having any problems with the computer. I just wanted to speed it up. I recently doubled the ram which helped, but adding an SSD drive sounded like a great idea.

I heard about people swapping out their HDD drive with an SSD and having problems, so I figured I would just leave the Hard Drive in place and put the SSD drive in the Optical Drive location and configure it to be the startup disk at that point. If I'm not moving the HDD drive, I'd rather not replace the 2011 IR cable with the 2012 IR cable since things seem okay.

The computer is still running just fine. I've taken it in to the Apple store for a few issues in the past, and it's possible that they changed out the IR cable at some point.

However, the SSD is read-only at this point. I figure I might as well just re-format, etc., etc., but let me know what you think.

Link fixed, maybe I need more coffee. I've had to replace over 100 of these cables. Look at the difference between the 2011 cables and the 2012. Boot from the original drive. Click once on the new drive and go to "Get Info" under file and see if the permissions are set to "Read Only".
