when I turn on my mac the apple is broken, screen gets gray digital looking lines then after a few seconds while it's trying to start up it says "you need to restart your computer hold down the power button for a several seconds or press the restart button" thats as far as it goes.What should I do?

Restart from your system installation disk. Go to the second screen pull down menu -> Utilities -> disk utility and repair the hard drive. Next repair the permissions. Now try starting.

I'm not very savey when comes to this but I got it started and ran a test and got 4VCD/1/40000003: VIDEO CONTROLLER BEFORE YOU GOT BACK TO ME. how do I get to the 2nd pull down menu?

I did what you said with the disk and ran a system check
