Boots past chime, logo. Keeps spinning until slash circle symbol.

Hi all, I am new here.

I inherited this old Mac Book. I am handy enough to fix everything else, and want to resurrect this baby. It (mis)behaves as described in the title. I tried to boot from the CD, which causes the CD drive to chug along, but nothing appear on screen. I tried Safe mode, but no go. I tried Verbose boot and got a lot of text, with repeating conclusion: "Cannot mount root . errno=19". I am hoping that it is just the hard drive, which I would then replace. Any educated guesses? Thanks in advance

Yes, I am eternally grateful: I solved this problem finally by simply pulling the hard drive out of my wife's MacBook 3.1, stuck it into my project, and voila, it worked.

Now I know what part was kaputt, and can just buy a new hard drive .Yay.

Thank you Mayer for encouraging me to do some prelim surgery. I am getting to know the unit.

Her machine is a 2007. Decide which machine will be used more and put the new drive in it. Consider a 500 GB SSHD for a speed bump. Connect the two machine via a firewire cable. Boot the machine with the new drive in it in Target Mode. Now format the drive. You can now either install a system or use something like SuperDuper to clone your system and apps. https://support.apple.com/kb/PH10725?loc...

Options

Let's see if it will boot cleanly first. Disconnect the hard drive cable from the logic board. Insert the original system installation disk and boot holding down the "C" key. If it fails, tell us about the disk you are booting from and your other boot options.

OK, I just removed the hard drive using the instruction here on the site. I am not sure if this is what you mean, because I see no cable on its own, just the slot the hard drive connects to. Unless you mean for me to remove the whole bottom of the laptop, to access the cable....?

So I tried this , have now a file folder with a question mark and my boot disc chugging away in the disk drive. It just got ejected. The disc is a DVD RD copy saying Macbook reboot on it. I used it a while back to fix the hard drive errors on my wife's Macbook 3.1. So I know it is working....

OK, I am in mid surgery here. What fun. Could you please clarify? Should I just disconnect the hard drive connector behind the (newly revealed) display data cable? Or is there need to disconnect the other end, where the hard drive connects?

I disconnected it just below the display data cable, and tried to boot from the disc. Same result as the complete hard drive removal. Disc drive chugged, then spit out the CD. What do you make of this? Thanks for the help.
