iPod wont turn on/apple logo is all that comes out.

my ipod is not responsive at all when unplugged even if i hold down power and home button........when i plug it in the apple logo comes out then goes off for a few seconds then back on for a few...so on...i left if plugged in for hours and thats all it does. while plugged in i held down home and power for 10 then released power and kept holding down home for 15 seconds...and it turns to the itunes logo with the plug in pic under it.....but as soon as i unplug it from wall charger it goes black. itunes wont pick it up. when i plug into laptop apple logo doesnt even blink on screen the way it does when i plug it into wall....is there anything i can do or replace? or should i just buy another ipod and chuck this one? HELP!
