unlocking iPhone to use with another carrier

my friend gave me her iPhone 5s from AT&T I am currently with cricket when I took it to cricket the girl try to put a SIM card and it read a error activation error message and I asked why and she said that is probably needed to be unlocked how can I do that? what would be the cheapest wayI tried to do it through AT&T but she doesn't remember most of the information that they ask to unlock the phone for me so I need another way. I would appreciate to help in this matter thank you.

Have your girlfriend visit the AT&T store with a copy of her last bill.

If the phone was fully paid off they are required to unlock it. Only after she has gotten it unlocked can you then use the SIM from Cricket.

She also may have the phone tied to her iCloud account. She will need to remove it (using here user name & password) if she intends to give you the phone. That way you can link it to your iCloud account.

So basically there are two locks here the carriers and Apples.
