soft, blurred photographs when taken through viewfinder

My D5200 takes crisp images when using live view but through the view finder (looks OK at the time) the photographs come out soft and sometimes with a milky haze. Anyone have any ideas?

The view finder has a focus adjust that is specific to it. It is a little wheel in the corner of the viewfinder. It is possible that it is out of focus and then when you focus your lens, it looks in focus but really is not. I'd recommend getting a crisp focus with live view and then switch to the viewfinder and don't adjust the focus on the lens, but adjust the viewfinder's focus.

Thank you Colton. I have altered this but it makes no difference. The quality of the image is as poor on auto focus as it is on manual. I think I may have a mirror problem.

I have the D5300 and I have spent months trying to fix the problem.

Finally, I set the diopter while wearing my glasses. I was adjusting the focus to suit my bad eyesight but I should have been wearing my glasses.

A cheap fix if it is your problem.

Glad you found the right solution to your problem Peter. I've now had the camera looked at professionally and it has a fault that was probably there from new & now problematic through "wear and tear". Shame it is 2 months out of warranty. The mirror box needs replacing.
