Display shuts off when I plug in VGA

I'm trying to duplicate monitors from my dell inspiron desktop. When i plug it into the VGA, my monitor goes black and my second monitor still doesn't pick up the signal. Any thoughts? I can't detect my second monitor because my screen goes black...

Hi,

Does the second monitor work when it is the only monitor connected? Can you connect it to the first monitor output source on the PC? i.e just trying to prove that the 2nd monitor actually works
