iPhone 5 with no screen, How can I check if it works?

I have purchased a second hand iPhone 5 with no screen at all. There is no home button or proximity sensor or earpiece or display. I can see all of the internals including the battery. How can i check if it turns on? I was planning on trying to get a screen for it but I don't want to waste money on a phone that doesn't work and never will work. It looks like the display had been forcefully ripped off of the phone. The ribbon that connects the display to the logic board is snapped and the screws at the bottom of the device have not been taken out.

Unfortunately there is no way to test the phone fully, however plugging it into iTunes should at least establish whether it is dead or not. Visit a local repair shop and ask them if they could try a screen on it for you to test if it still works, most decent repair shops should be willing to help out.
