Really odd quirks...what's wrong with it?

I bought a broken ipod 5th generation to get some experience in repair. The seller listed it as "broken click wheel."

However when I turned it on the clickwheel worked for a couple of seconds, then the unit turned off (it wasn't charged). Thereafter the clickwheel stopped working. I replaced the clickwheel with a functioning one I had on hand and it didn't work.

Then I charged the ipod a bit and unplugged it from the charger - after a couple of minutes it turned to a white screen of death, at random. I let the battery drain and it was no longer acknowledging the hold switch. Turned it on again - seems fine, except for the non-functioning click wheel.

So, end of story - it loads in iTunes some of the time, but it has all of these weird quirks and the click wheel doesn't work.

Is this a logic board issue?

I also am a newbie to working on the iPods and have taken apart a couple of them. It sounds like this might be a logic board problem, your Nano may have water damage. The only way to find out about this is to disassemble the iPod and look for corrosion. If there is corrosion, it could be shorting out the logic board.

Cleaning tips are available throughout these forums. However, the battery must be fully discharged or be disconnected before using any sort of cleaner!

The gen 5 iPods are a pain to disassemble, they have many small parts. Work slowly and carefully. Good luck!
