Replacing Speaker/Dock Connector/Antenna Assembly = Bad Reception

I replaced the speaker/dock/antenna assembly with a unit that was touted as an OEM replacement. I did this because the speaker went dead. Headphones worked, but the speaker didn't. The replacement worked, but it turns out I now have

1) worse reception than I initially had. I'm consistently getting Edge in buildings where 3G was originally received (even in my home). The iFixIt guide was very helpful in showing me how to remove the assembly, but now I need further details about the actual antenna component. The ribbon looks like it needs to be desoldered, but I don't know which component is which (I believe the ribbon with the #7 connector is the antenna). I don't want to tear it apart/desolder it just to find out I soldered the failed part onto the new one.

2) the replacement speaker isn't as loud as the oem one.

Thanks for any help!
