MacBook will not recognize 8 or 16GB of newly installed ram

I have a Mid 2009 Apple MacBook Pro 17" A1297 with a 2.8GHz Processor and 4GB of RAM.

I have tried various sets of memory sticks of 8 and 16GB 1067MHz DDR3 PC8500 RAM, and none of them worked.

When booted up with the 8GB of newly installed RAM, the system would beep...beep beep...beep...and so on and would never recognize it.

With the 16GB of RAM it just would continuously Beep...beep...beep. I have the latest El Capitan OS installed.

Does anyone know what to do or how to configure this to 8 to 16GB of RAM? Any help would be appreciated.

Your machine won't take more than two 4 GB sticks.

Two 4 GB modules, you can't use a single 8 GB module.
