Do you have access to a second Mac which you can connect via Target Mode between the two systems? or have access to a bootable OS-X external drive (USB or FireWire)?

You'll need to find the original grey disks that came with your system or a retail version of the OS-X so you can boot the system up via your optical drive to fix your internal HD. If that is not an option then you'll need to find a friend with a Mac to use in Target Mode: How to Boot a Mac in Target Disk Mode. Once you have you'll need to run Disk Utility to check your HD out and if needed repair it.

See if that fixes things if not you'll need to reformat and re-install the OS on the drive. But before you do that make sure to copy off anything important first (if you can)!
